Old secrets run deep.
The perfect escape
turns deadly.
All journalist Jack Myers wants is a relaxing Irish holiday. Retreating from his demanding job as a foreign correspondent, he thinks he's found the perfect escape – the stately St Peter's Manor, perched on the edge of Lough Derg in County Tipperary, just in time for Ireland's longest heatwave.
When a mysterious drowning occurs during the annual Midsummer Ball, Jack's instincts tell him something isn't quite right. A commodore who vanished a decade earlier, a tight-knit group of childhood friends harbouring old secrets, and motives as tangled as the lakeside reeds.
As the heatwave presses down on this tranquil corner of Ireland, tensions rise – and in a small village where everyone has something to hide, the truth may be the most dangerous discovery of all.
Prologue
The phone on the desk vibrated into life with the incoming call, displaying 'No Caller ID' on its screen. The young sales associate braced herself. She had been expecting his call all afternoon.
As she moved to pick up the phone, a hand reached down and curtly swiped it up. She looked up to see the authoritative figure of her director standing over her, a bemused smile on her face.
'This him, is it?' she inquired loudly. 'We'll just have to set him straight.'
'I really don't care who I deal with, as long as this mess gets sorted,' responded the man sharply.
'The house isn't safe,' he said at last. A desperate laugh came through the line. 'You have no idea the situation you've put me in. What I'll have to do …'
The line went dead.
Chapter One
It was just after 5 p.m. when Jack Myers arrived on the shores of Lough Derg and looked out across the bay, the water simmering beneath a cloudless sky. The heat, which had made the afternoon headlines when it reached thirty-one degrees, had shed little of its intensity.
He smiled to himself as he took in the view from the old stone jetty at Garrykennedy Harbour. Small dinghies with sails of every colour zigzagged in the distance, and the sailors' laughter carried across the water.
A raised voice drifted from the far end of the jetty. A heavy-set woman paced in circles, phone pressed to her ear, oblivious to Jack nearby.
'I won't allow it. After everything I've done for this club … I'll kill her for this.'
