Globally renowned fiddle player Martin Hayes will be on hand on April 26, to launch Peadar Ó Riada’s extraordinary new book, Ceoltóirí Chualann. Peader will also be joined by Seán Ó Sé and Michael Tubridy, for what is set to be a very special evening filled with stories, music, and a unique insight into the “band that changed the course of Irish music.”
This exceptional book, is a vivid blend of memoir and historical narrative, drawing on the rich experience and records of Éamon de Buitléar, Michael Tubridy, and the Ó Riada archives. It also includes 400 musical arrangements and original scores in Seán Ó Riada’s hand.
From the birth of Ceoltóirí Chualann in the 1960s, to the complexities of their trailblazing musical arrangements, composed by the visionary Seán Ó Riada, this book showcases their ability to blend traditional Irish music with complex orchestration.
Formed against the backdrop of a changing Ireland, Ceoltóirí Chualann saw a once marginalised traditional music scene flourish, as their imaginative new take on the classic genre grew in popularity and influence.
The book also gives readers a fascinating, one-of-a-kind insight into the legendary band’s genius creative process, featuring details of rehearsals, recordings, broadcasts, and a detailed discography.
Enriched by Seán Ó Sé’s anecdotes, Ceoltóirí Chualann is a hugely important book that serves as a love letter to the changing face of traditional Irish music and culture, making it a must-read for both enthusiasts and newcomers alike.
