David Courtney is originally from Tullamore and joined the Defence Forces as a cadet in 1980. He was commissioned as an officer in 1982 and qualified as a pilot 1983. He has flown helicopters since 1986. Initially as an Air Corps Rescue Pilot and joined civil helicopter Search And Rescue (SAR) in 1994 operating as Coast Guard SAR Captain until 2001. He has flown approx. 300 emergency flights of all types. He is married with four children. He lives in Co Clare and now works as a commercial airline pilot.
