Barry, Anthony

Anthony Barry was born in Cork in June 1901. At the age of fourteen he entered his father’s tea business. He later joined the National Army, where he served as a captain until the end of the Civil War. He returned to the family business and built Barry’s into a premier tea firm. He was a founding member of Cumann na nGaedheal and in 1954 was elected to Dáil Éireann. He served in the Dáil and Seanad until 1965. He was a member of Cork Corporation until 1967 and was Lord Mayor of Cork in 1961–62.
